BEING SOLD WITH TITLE
The previous owner of this restored Scout II has 45 years of experience that includes numerous restorations.
In 2023, he acquired a Kentrol fiberglass body and another Scout to begin this particular project. The long-standing goal was to construct a Fiberglass SSII, appreciating its lighter weight compared to a steel tub and its resistance to rust. Over the past year and a half, the previous owner meticulously rebuilt, restored, or replaced every component, starting from a sandblasted and painted bare frame and axles.
For the powertrain, he sourced an IH SV-345cu.in engine, which underwent a thorough machine shop process: boring 0.030 over, machining bearings for the mains and cam, and machining and polishing the heads and crankshaft. The engine assembly was completed in late 2023. This engine is now equipped with a HFI (Hamilton Fuel Injection) GM-style throttle body, utilizing a GM computer that also controls timing. The TF727 automatic transmission was rebuilt by a local shop, and the Dana 20 transfer case was also rebuilt with new bearings and seals. Both Dana 44 axles received new seals and a complete brake overhaul (disc front, drum rear). New 31/10.5.15 all-terrain tires were installed on black powder-coated Scout II wagon wheels.
The Kentrol body, front inner fenders, outer fenders, grill, lower valance, and windshield frame were all meticulously cleaned. Any questionable areas were cut out and replaced with new fiberglass. The steel structural supports were replaced, and all original floor supports were removed and replaced with marine plywood in the rear floor section and 1.25” Coosa Board (used for boat transoms) for the main floor supports. The firewall was filled and smoothed. The bottom of the tub was sprayed with bedliner material, and the body parts were painted with a blue CAS525 color code (base coat, clear coat), then wet sanded and buffed. SSII-style graphics were applied after buffing. A new Bestop bikini top and hardware were installed, extending from the windshield to the factory-style black powder-coated rollbar. A factory SSII grill and factory SSII door inserts, complete with metal half-door frames, were also installed.
The interior floor was covered in Sea-Dek style marine foam. The factory bucket seats and the rear fold-and-tumble bench seat were re-covered in weather-resistant tan vinyl with blue piping. The factory center console was restored, and a new lid was fabricated and wrapped with matching vinyl, featuring an embroidered IH logo. The factory dash pad was restored and covered in matching vinyl, and the factory gauges were restored. A waterproof marine Dual Bluetooth stereo was installed in place of the factory radio, with speakers integrated into the vent covers in the kick panels.
Finally, all new wiring was installed using an American AutoWire harness. All lights, gauges, wipers, fan, and radio are fully functional. Additionally, new battery wiring to the starter and ground wiring to the engine block were installed, along with a new marine battery.
What a beautiful restoration and piece of American automobile history!
