1964 – The grand debut of Ford’s ‘65 Mustang.
1965 Mustangs– First Generation Mustang with a 289. Total sales were 681,000 which was seven times the expected projection.
1967 Mustangs – Major changes, with the Mustang growing in length, width, and weight. New 302-cid (4.9-liter) V-8 big block engine.
1969 Mustangs – 3.8-inches longer and half an inch wider, with a new 351-cid (5.8-liter) V-8 with 250 or 290 hp.
1971 Mustangs– Again increased size and bulk with a diverse profile due to a buttressed rear window. New 351 became the biggest engine in Mustangs yet.
1974-1978 Mustangs– Introduction of the Mustang II to offer a smaller size on an elongated Pinto platform. Offered a 140-cid (2.3-liter) 4-cylinder or a 171-cid (2.8-liter) V-6.
1979-1993 Mustangs – Built on a new platform (Fox) and underwent a redesign in 1987 to offer the Mustang LX or Mustang GT. Engines changed over time including a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, 2.8 liter V-6, 3.3 liter I-6, and the 4.9 V-8. This was also when Ford began building 140-mph Mustang cop cars.
1994-2004 Mustangs – Ford went back to their roots and the redesign featured nods to the classic Mustang look and feel (with a few facelifts along the way). Engines went through changes including 4.9-liter V-8 with 215 hp, 3.8-liter V-6, 4.9 modular 4.6-liter OHC V-8, V-6 at 190 hp, and V-8 at 260 hp.
2005-2014 Mustangs – A new design that evoked the first generation Mustang. Used a 4.0-liter V-6 that produced 210 hp or a 4.6-liter V-8 at 300 hp.
2015– Today – Modern Mustangs – The latest iteration of the Mustang. Offers a 300-hp V-6, 435-hp V-8, and 310-hp, 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder.
